New pub The Mermaid Tavern inspired by Shakespeare opens in Merseyside

The Mermaid Tavern on Market Place in Prescot has officially opened its doors.

The new pub is from the people behind The Lord Strange and Spanish Caravan. The venue was previously Kingsmen Street Food and the building has now been transformed into a “very high end” space offering comfort and luxury. The pub features bare brick walls, an oak bar with a maple top and a number of Chesterfield sofas and tub chairs.

The new pub took its name from the original Mermaid Tavern pub in London, after one of the owners discovered the story of The Sireniacal Gentlemen and The Gunpowder plot during research. The Mermaid Tavern also features a number of nods to Shakespeare and The Gunpowder plot, with images of Shakespeare and The Sireniacal Gentleman who met at the original Mermaid Tavern.

Visitors will also be able to spot poems written by John Keats and Beaumont which reference the illustrious history of the original The Mermaid Tavern.

The Mermaid Tavern in Prescot (The Mermaid Tavern)

The location for The Mermaid Tavern was chosen due to its close proximity to the new Shakespeare North Theatre, as well as the owners’ other Prescot bars. The pub is also offering a range of pies and pastries for visitors to snack on.

Kurt Wilson, co-owner of The Mermaid Tavern, said: “The reaction has been amazing. We were locked out across the opening weekend. We think the addition of the Belgian beer offering to Prescot has really grabbed people’s attention, we are bringing a taste of Brussels to Liverpool, there’s nowhere quite like it in the area.”

You can find The Mermaid Tavern at 21 Market Place, Prescot, L34 5SB. For more information, click here .
