A new pub has opened in the Northern Quarter, taking over an iconic venue which sadly shut down after struggling with the Covid pandemic earlier this year. The Mancunian Bar opened towards the end of last month on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter, with a mural dedicated to the city on the wall and serving local beers and more.
The micropub is nestled next to Gullivers and teased its opening on social media in June. It has taken over the site of The Ancoats Lad pub which sadly shut earlier this year, citing struggles with the Covid pandemic and associated lockdowns of hospitality.
The pub features a mural by Dave Draws which celebrates 'pubs old and new in the area' and pictures from local photographers of the city. The Mancunian posted on its Instagram when it was opening saying it was for 'fellow Mancunians old and new'.

The pub's management also managed to get the post-box outside the bar freshened up with a lick of paint. The pub promises to sell local drinks, from the iconic Boddingtons Bitter, ales from Salford's Shindigger Brewery, and lager from the Manchester Union Brewery. The Salford Rum company and Manchester Gin also appear behind the bar.

The Ancoats Lad announced its closure at the start of this year in heart-breaking fashion with landlord Phil Bell, 73, posting a laminated message on the pub's exterior saying: "Thank you for some wonderful years." They said the relationship they had with customers brought them 'great joy' but that the toll of the pandemic, including losing friends, made it time for them to close.
They also had to close for New Years when Phil's wife, Jackie, and good friend Nicola came down with Covid-19. Covid regulations during the pandemic also meant they could only fit seven or eight people in the bar with social distancing measures, forcing them to remain shut throughout much of their final two years.
The new Mancunian Bar is open until midnight from Sunday to Thursday, staying open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. You can follow them on Instagram here.
