Sony has just debuted a new, limited edition PS4 Pro bundle ahead of the release of The Last of Us Part 2, celebrating the game and specifically, Ellie’s tattoo.
While I have seen many special edition consoles for games that look terrible, this one, which uses Ellie’s “infection” arm tattoo as inspiration, engraved on both the console and the controller, actually looks pretty normal and good.
This bundle, which costs the same as a not-on-sale PS4 Pro at $400, will include The Last of Us Part 2 plus some codes for extra digital content for the game. There are also additional pieces to this “set,” with headphones and an external hard drive that also feature the TLOU 2 tattoo theme., but those are not included in the base price. That makes me uh, have a few questions about the size of this game. All of this does not launch until the game itself arrives on June 19, 2020.
So yes, this is all very good looking and cool and big collectors might want to shell out for the console. And yet for most people? No, I don’t think June, which should be around five months before the PS5 launches, is probably not the best time to buy a full price PS4 Pro.
If you’re a big enough fan where a Last of Us 2 bundle like this interests you in the first place, you are probably already a proud owner of a PS4 or PS4 Pro, which you have purchased in the last five years or so. If not, and you are in the market for a new console, it is probably in your best interest to wait until October or November to pick up a PlayStation 5, which is likely going to launch at somewhere between $400 and $500, by recent estimates, and you know that it’s going to be able to play The Last of Us Part 2 better than any current hardware, with either some sort of backwards compatibility or a PS5-specific version (though that hasn’t been announced yet).
So while I understand the desire of Sony to release a console that is tied to one of their biggest games and best series, on the consumer side, it is probably just not a great idea to pick up this console if you already own a PS4 or Pro, or for anyone that is planning to get a PS5 in just a few months. That $400 could go toward 80-100% of the final price for that system, based on what we know.
But yes, it is pretty.
