New project could see walking and cycling link created for Carmyle - Westburn bridge

Local communities are being asked for their say on an exciting new project to create a new walking, cycling and wheeling connection using the former Carmyle-Westburn railway bridge.

As part of the proposed project, which is backed by funding from Transport Scotland, local people are being asked to share their views on plans to redevelop the viaduct as a walking, wheeling and cycling link across the River Clyde.

The plans, delivered by Sustrans Scotland in partnership with Amey Consulting, would create a new link to the well-used Clyde Walkway along National Cycle Network Route 75.

An online consultation will allow people to submit their ideas for the area. The consultation, which can be accessed at carmylewestburn-viaduct.com, is open for comments until February 24.

Shaped by public feedback and further consultation with groups and individuals in the area, further design phases for the project will be carried out throughout 2021.

Claire Frost, engineer at Sustrans Scotland, said: “Given the global events of the past few months, the importance of providing more opportunities for people to walk, wheel and cycle safely has never been higher.

“Many people across Scotland have been experiencing the physical and mental health benefits of walking, wheeling or cycling for essential journeys and daily exercise, and this exciting project will give even more local residents the chance to connect with their nearby National Cycle Network route.

“Scotland’s communities are our greatest source of local knowledge, and are uniquely placed to share the needs and ambitions of people living, working and socialising in their area.

“We want to work with the communities of Carmyle, Westburn and the surrounding areas to ensure that this new link to National Cycle Network Route 75 becomes a locally loved connection that is used and valued by people in both communities.

“We hope to hear from as many people in the area as possible through our online consultation process.”

Jim Ewing, senior team leader for Bike Town, part of Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust, commented: “This exciting development will create new options for routes to walk, wheel and cycle along and across the river, not only for the communities of Westburn and Carmyle, but also those living further afield.

“The viaduct crossing will improve the riverside environs and both encourage and make it easier for everybody to be active in their travels. We encourage you to wholeheartedly support and take part in the consultations.”
