A homicide probe is underway into the death of a man who left a motel to go for a walk in the middle of the night and never returned.
He was found on a suburban street with fatal head injuries but detectives don't know how or why he came to be injured, sparking a public appeal to help track his final movements.
The man, from Alexandra in northeast Victoria, had been staying with his partner at a motel in Dandenong in Melbourne's southeast.
The 52-year-old suffered from leg cramping, so often went for a walk to alleviate the pain.
He left their room around 2am on Friday February 28 and his partner raised the alarm when he didn't come back.
The man was found badly injured by a passerby at about 7am on Fifth Avenue and taken to hospital where he later died.
Police say he died from head injures but don't know how he came to be hurt.
He was last seen alive on CCTV at 2.11am the morning he disappeared.
Police have released CCTV of him at the start of his final walk and footage from earlier in the day.
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Rob Nazaretia urged anyone with information or footage from the area to come forward immediately.
Police particularly want people who may have walked past the man to reach out.
"At this point in time investigators have been unable to definitively establish the circumstances which led to this man's death, not discounting the possibility of a physical assault or some other cause," Det Insp Nazaretia said.
"If you were one of those people in the area at the time or you have CCTV or dashcam footage which has not already been provided to police, please, we encourage you to come forward now."
