New print version of Highway Code will highlight changes

The new print version of The Highway Code is now available to buy. It has been updated to include recent changes and is available in shops and online.

The printed version can also be bought from safedrivingforlife.info/shop. It highlights all the recent changes to the code, which include regulations on self-driving vehicles, the hand-held mobile rules change and alterations to sentencing for driving-related offences.

Since January The Highway Code has included improved guidance on taking responsibility for one's own safety and that of people around you, based on their relative vulnerability. The full version of The Highway Code is available, free of charge, on GOV.UK. The new Highway Code also appears in the Official DVSA Theory Test Kit app, available from the App Store and Google Play.

This year's changes to the code include pedestrians having priority at junctions and a requirement for cyclists to ride in the middle of their lane. Motorists have also been told to leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists and two metres for horse riders. Cyclists now have priority on roundabouts but they should slow down in spaces shared with pedestrians.

The Highway Code, which was first published in 1931, is collated information, advice, guides and mandatory rules for road users in the UK. Its objective is to promote road safety.

The Highway Code applies to all road users including pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists, as well as motorcyclists and drivers. It gives information on road signs, road markings, vehicle markings and road safety.

There are annexes in the long-running publication on vehicle maintenance, licence requirements, documentation, penalties and vehicle security.
