New Prime Minister: What will happen this week as next PM enters No 10?

The new Prime Minister of the UK and leader of the Conservative Party will be announced tomorrow.

They'll take over Number 10 from Theresa May after a long leadership battle, which has been whittled down to contenders Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt.

Voting by the 160,000 Tory members will come to a close today at 5pm, where ballots will then be counted overnight.

The winning candidate needs to have won by 50 per cent of the vote, and will officially start their position in the next few days.

It's a very busy schedule ahead for the next leader, so we've looked into what is likely to happen after the announcement.

When will Theresa May formally resign? When will the new PM start to draw in their new Government? When will they meet with the Queen? Expect big change with many speeches - here's everything you need to know about the week ahead:

Wednesday

Theresa May, who is the UK's current Prime Minister, was elected in 2016.

Three years later, she will take her final PM's Questions on Wednesday in the Commons before formally resigning.

Mrs May is expected to return to Downing Street to have lunch and address the staff at Number 10, where she will then make a short statement to media outside the famous black door.

She will then head to Buckingham Palace to offer her resignation to the Queen.

The monarch will then meet with the new Tory Party leader, either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt, at the Palace and invite him to form a new government.

Thursday

As their first day in office, the new PM will likely be finalising their Government.

The new prime minister will likely spend their first full day in office finalising their Government - with appointments to the Cabinet and ministerial team expected.

The Commons will rise for the summer recess, with MPs not due to return until September 3.

However, several Tory ministers have announced they plan to resign if Boris Johnson takes up the position.

Chancellor Philip Hammond announced his plans to quit if Boris wins on the Andrew Marr Show on Saturday, saying that he would rather leave his post than be sacked.

Justice Secretary David Gauke who opposes a no deal Brexit has also announced he will quit if Boris becomes leader.

Friday

If arrangements haven't been finalised by Friday, a Cabinet reshuffle could still be taking place.

The new PM will then make their first official visit to one of four UK regions.
