New Porth transport hub to get from £225k of South Wales Metro funding

A new transport hub for Porth will benefit from £225,000 from the first phase of South Wales Metro funding.

The Porth Interchange project will receive Cardiff Capital Region City Deal funding which has been agreed for two of the original Metro Plus phase one projects.

The transport hub will be located on the site of the former Alec Jones Day Centre and include both bus and rail services and the money will go towards supporting the first phase of this.

It will include a new seven bay bus station, a ticket office, taxi drop off, electric vehicle infrastructure, a park and ride and cycle facilities potentially for the Next Bike rental scheme.

There would also be a new ticketing system to link bus and rail journeys.

The £225,000 park and ride will include 29 spaces under a proposal which was funded and carried out by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

Porth town centre set for complete transport overhaul

The other scheme which is part of this stage of the Metro Plus programme is the £85,000 project to improve connections in the Cardiff East bus corridor and there are several other schemes in the pipelines

The Metro Plus programme was initially agreed in March 2019 where the 10 Cardiff Capital Region City Deal authorities, Welsh Government and Transport for Wales identified a proposed £50 million programme of local transport schemes to support the implementation of the South Wales Metro.

The new transport hub is part of the council’s Porth Town Centre Regeneration Strategy.

This includes a community hub known as Porth Plaza which would be created housing a range of council services under one roof in the centre of town.

There would also be additional parking provided in the town centre, the extension of the park and ride scheme, a town maintenance grant to improve the appearance of properties in the town centre and the redevelopment of Porth Junior School site into housing.

There would also be a number of improvements made to streets and town centre spaces to make them look more attractive.
