New poll sees Labour's approval rating fall to record low

LABOUR'S approval rating has fallen to the lowest level since the party entered government, according to a new poll.

The latest figures, published by YouGov on Tuesday, found 70% of people disapproved of Keir Starmer's Government.

A total of 11% of people across the UK said they approved of the Labour Government, while 19% said they didn't know.

It means Labour's net approval rating has fallen by five points to -59% since the last YouGov poll was conducted on August 24.

The most recent disapproval rating is lower than it was for the Conservatives just before last year's General Election (56%).

In Scotland, the disapproval rate is even higher. A total of 72% of Scots said they did not approve of the UK Labour Government, compared to 9% who said they did, and 19% who said they didn't know.

It comes as MPs returned from recess this week, with the first Prime Minister's Questions since the summer break set to take place on Wednesday.

Since returning, the Labour Government has made several announcements on immigration, with the Home Secretary using the first day back from recess to announce a new clampdown on the rights of refugees to bring their families to the UK.

And on Tuesday, the Home Office confirmed it is targeting international students by texting them with threats they will be removed from the UK if they overstay their visas.

Ministers have also been embroiled in a debate over flags, with Starmer saying he hangs the English flag inside his home and "always sits in front of a Union Jack", while Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she owned both Union flag and St George's flag "bunting and tablecloths".

The YouGov poll surveyed 1770 UK adults on September 1. A total of 154 adults were surveyed from Scotland.
