New play area for football, basketball and cricket opens in Stapleford

A new £160,000 games area has opened in Stapleford.

It was officially opened at Hicklings Lane Recreation Ground last week as part of Broxtowe Borough Council’s Pride in Parks scheme.

The new area has high ball rebound fencing around all sides which will be used for both football and basketball.

There is also a set of cricket stumps which the council hope will maximise the number of sports that can be played in the space.

New markings for the sports have been created on the tarmac surfacing.

The total scheme, which also includes a full refurbishment of the play area, was funded by a £93,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation, along with a further £67,000 from the council's Pride in Parks scheme.

The park is mainly used by Stapleford Town Football Club who also contributed £1,000 towards the project.

Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, councillor Michael Brown joined Pete Scott, the chair of Stapleford Town Football Club and the town mayor of Stapleford, councillor Ray Darby at an opening event last week.

Cheryl Raynor, FCC communities foundation’s local grant manager said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Hickings Lane Recreation Ground project and pleased that our funding will help to enhance this great facility, we look forward to the further phase being completed shortly.

"FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund."

The football club together with Stapleford Community Group provided valuable support to the funding application.
