New plans for sleeper train from Glasgow to Germany proposed

A proposal for a European overnight rail network has been announced, and one of the lines would connect Glasgow to Germany.

The plans which were shared by the German Green Party - known as The Greens - would allow passengers to depart in Glasgow and wake up in Frankfurt.

The sprawling network would consist of over 40 night train lines that would connect countries across Europe, such as Italy, France, Spain and Turkey.

Some of the other cities that would be connected if the train line were to go ahead would be Dublin and Paris, London and Vienna, and Rome and Berlin.

If the plans were to go ahead, a railway line would also connect Edinburgh and Frankfurt.

The Greens shared a list of requirements that would need to be met in order to properly implement the ambitious rail network.

These include the need for comfortable, quiet night trains that can reach speeds of up to 250km/h, a customer-friendly uniform booking platform across all participating railway companies, and cheap tickets that can compete with air travel prices.

On their website, the Greens state: "In order to build a real European night train network, it is necessary for the EU and the participating states, especially Germany, to take money into their own hands.

"This is especially true for the first few years in order to build up an attractive new night train market.

"One thing is clear: people are ready to use night trains."
