New plans for home of Liverpool nightclub Playground once visited by Coleen Rooney and Alex Gerrard

Plans to convert a former Liverpool nightclub into a conference centre have been submitted to Liverpool Council.

Playground, housed within the city's Hilton Hotel, was once a favourite spot for Liverpool celebrities but closed several years ago.

At the height of its popularity, celebs such as Coleen Rooney, Danielle Lloyd and Alex Gerrard were pictured inside the venue and it became known in the city for lavish spending when a 30-litre bottle of Champagne was sold from the club's 18 foot long bar for £125,000 in 2012.

However, it was the subject of a licence review the following year after a member of staff was punched in the face and police officers found wraps of cocaine in a VIP area.

The hotel's owner has now applied for permission to convert the former nightclub and extend the hotel's Grace Suite, which hosts conferences and meetings, out slightly and use the area that used to house Playground as an events space.

A report submitted with the planning application says:"The principle driver for this development is the limited number of people that the current venue can hold. Hilton have already established that there is clearly demand for quality venues that will cater to larger markets in the City and with the proposed extension to the Grace Suite their aim is to create a quality venue which has state of the art facilities and can potentially hold up to 600 people."

Liverpool Council's planning department will now consider the application.
