New plans for Edinburgh’s historic Jenners store released after devastating fire

Architects have made updates to the plans for Jenners redevelopment, after the devastating fire that broke out on January 23.

The plans, from David Chipperfield Architects, include changes to the Rose Street exterior, the internal stair, and bridge link. Danish billionaire Andres Holch Povlsen’s AAA United holding company have now presented the proposals to the City of Edinburgh Council.

Mr Povlsen bought the building in 2017, for a cool £53 million. Before this, it was owned by Frasers Group - though the structure is now due to reopen as a hotel.

Revisions to the plans include changed to the atrium stair arrangement, with the plans stating: “The historic stair is to be removed due to arrangement needed for fire-fighting stair.”

The statement also said: “The bridge link has been carefully designed to remain respectful to the historic Jenners building. The new proposal raises the volume by approximately three metres to create a terrace to the bar at level seven.”

“Horizontal lintels moved to align with floor slabs, stone upstand beneath windows, openable glazed panels for natural ventilation and metalwork in patinated brass”.

Firefighter Barry Martin, 38, died four days after tackling the blaze in Jenners.
