New planning application for site beside St Anne's Park proposes development of 657 apartments

A new planning application for a site at St Anne's Park in Raheny proposes the development of 657 apartments.

Marlet yesterday submitted the application for the site which proposes nine block of apartments between five and nine storeys in height.

It's the biggest proposal for the site so far - despite continued objection by the local community which included thousands of submissions and a protest.

Last year, a proposal for 500 homes on the same site was quashed after High Court proceedings began.

An Bord Pleanala had initially granted permission for the proposal which included 400 apartments and 100 houses, but later told the High Court they had "made an error" in granting permission and agreed to quash the permission.

The new application has also been submitted through the fast-track Strategic Housing Development system.

It also looks to include 499 parking spaces, 1,646 bike spaces and will be made up of 224 one bedroom units, 378 two bedroom units and 55 three bedroom units over 6.4 hectares.

The proposals have been met with serious concerns by locals, who were made aware of it through the I Love St Anne's community group which has protested against the development of the site in the past.

One local commented: "These guys just don’t give up do they. I really hope they can be stopped."

While another said: "These people just will not give up but little do they know NEITHER WILL WE!"

And a third said: "This is an utter nightmare."

Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has been one of the spear-heading campaigners to save the parkland.

He's said that the campaign to safeguard St Anne's will continue, despite attempts by the developers to build on it.

He said: "This latest planning application for 647 apartments in blocks of 5-9 stories in height, is twice the size of the 2015 application.

“What we’re seeing here is just the latest attempt to destroy these lands under the guise of a strategic housing process.

“Once again this shows the flawed nature of the Strategic Housing Development Act, which prioritises developer greed over the needs of communities.

“Concerned residents can be assured that our campaign to retain the environmental integrity of St Anne’s Park continues and we will once again oppose this proposed development.

“Residents have until the 20 November to lodge an objection, and I will continue to campaign on their behalf.”
