New plan will change how we live and work in phase two

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick set out some of the work being done to reopen the economy once the lockdown is eased.

This comes after Boris Johnson suggested that some of the measures he announces on Sunday could be implemented as soon as the next day.

Speaking at the daily Downing Street press conference, Mr Jenrick said: "Every local economy now needs a plan to restart and recover."

He said the government is working on a detailed plan of how to adapt certain areas during phase two of lockdown.

This includes:

  • How workplaces from factories to construction sites to offices can be adapted
  • How outdoor spaces, leisure and businesses from parks to high streets to markets can be managed
  • How public transport networks from the Tube to trams to buses can operate

Mr Jenrick said: "In each case, guided by scientific and medical advice, we want to ensure appropriate and safe social distancing, providing the public with the confidence to return to work and to return to public spaces and public transport knowing that it is always safe to do so."

However, Mr Jenrick said it is still too early to reopen religious services.

He said: "We are in conversation with faith leaders across the country to consider how, when the time is right, they will be able to recommence services in churches and mosques and synagogues across the country.

"But that moment is not now."
