New plan for Nottingham Forest loan winger Diogo Goncalves

Portuguese winger Diogo Goncalves is expected to return to his homeland at the end of the Championship campaign.

The 22-year-old is on a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest from Benfica, but has struggled to make an impact at the City Ground, after arriving last summer along with compatriot Joao Carvalho.

A report in Portuguese newspaper A Bola suggests the winger will return to Lisbon later this year, but instead of being sent out on loan next term, as was originally expected, will feature in Bruno Lage’s first team squad.

In a frustrating campaign for the youngster, Goncalves has played just 10 times for the Reds, with seven of those coming in the Championship.

His solitary league start came on the opening day of the season at Ashton Gate in the 1-1 draw with Bristol City.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Joao Carvalho left Nottingham Forest this summer, and if they lost money on him

Under new boss Martin O’Neill, he has appeared off the bench three times with his most recent outing coming in the 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa earlier this month.
