Ageing cast iron gas pipes which were laid under a Basford street in the 1960s are to undergo £300,000 replacement works.
The pipes under Nottingham Road, Basford are around the size of a tractor tire and will be replaced by modern plastic pipes to secure the safety and supply of gas to residents in the area.
The gas being used is the main source of heating for 80 percent of local residents.
Cadent Gas, which will be undertaking the works for eight weeks starting on Monday, April 8, say the new pipes will last around 80 years.
Throughout the duration of the works, there will be no access from Perry Road into Nottingham Road and a contra-flow system will be in place in Nottingham Road for around 300 metres.

The works will be taking place along the section of road next to Basford cemetery.
Cadent authorising engineer Paul Patrick said: "We are investing in the future of Nottingham’s gas network so local residents can stay safe and warm for decades to come.
"We’ll do our best to complete the work as soon as possible and to minimise any disruption. This is a busy road, though, so we would advise people to leave extra time for their journeys, especially during rush hour.
"Once the new pipes are in the ground we won’t need to come back and renew them for 80 years."
