New pictures of former ferry Endeavour sinking in Canada Dock

Hopes a heritage vessel could be renovated and brought back into service are starting to fade as its condition continues to deteriorate alarmingly in a Liverpool dock.

The ECHO reported work on restoring the ex-German harbour ferry, re-named the Endeavour, had ground to a halt earlier this year.

It has since been gradually sinking in Canada Dock within the Port of Liverpool complex - and these latest pictures were taken from on board a ferry cruise last month.

A team of volunteers was formed last year to help transform the abandoned vessel and bring it back into use as a working cruiser sailing between Liverpool and North Wales.

It was previously claimed that repair work had stopped after the vessel began taking in large volumes of water following a break-in - an assertion which was rubbished by others, who said the Endeavour was taking in water long before the alleged incident.

The volunteer group, TSMV Endeavour Project, now appears to have deleted its Facebook page.

However a post from back in May said: "The doors to the vessel were wide open, and a lot of areas look as if they had been searched through.

"Discussions followed with port officials and we were forbidden from a health and safety point of view to... board the vessel until it was safe to do so.

"Endeavour is now partially submerged at Canada dock, and we are working with the port authority to put a plan in place moving forward, as well as with the port police to see if there was any suspicious activity.

"The ship has had work halted in recent months as we had been working with various companies and agencies to move the vessel to an area where she could be inspected safely as the depth of water below her keel at the current berth was just over one meter.

"At this time, she has settled on the dock floor, eight out of her nine watertight compartments are now submerged including the machinery spaces.

"There were a variety of events which has led up to this, both from all parties involved, however we believe in looking to the future, whatever that may hold."

A spokesperson for Port of Liverpool owner, Peel Ports , said: "The Endeavour is not owned by Peel Ports, however we are liaising with the appropriate organisations to stabilise and secure the vessel."

The former German harbour ferry was built in 1959 and was in service until 1995. It was originally brought to Liverpool for an unsuccessful business venture and ended up rusting in the docks.

After refurbishment work was complete, it was hoped to turn the vessel into a 450 passenger day cruise-ferry and static venue, operated by the Liverpool and North Wales Steamship Company with services running between Liverpool, Llandudno and Anglesey.
