New picture reveals scale of damage caused by Speedwell fire

Fire crews remain at the scene of the devastating Speedwell fire more than 60 hours after the blaze broke out.

At least 70 firefighters from Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire battled the flames through Friday night (May 3) at the Strachan and Henshaw Building, based on Foundry Lane.

Residents living in the homes close to the blaze were told they had to leave their properties and take shelter in a nearby church.

Others reported hearing explosions and seeing fireballs shoot up into the sky.

A picture taken at the scene by Kingswood firefighters this morning (May 6) shows the blackened ruins of the building as well as several burnt out cars.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue confirmed that two fire engines are monitoring the scene this morning.

"We have still got two pumps in attendance at the moment making sure there's no hot spots," he said.

He added that an investigation into the cause of the fire would be carried out by police if the site is deemed safe.

"Police will carry out the investigation in conjunction with us, possibly either later today or tomorrow (May 7)," he said.

Resident reaction

One resident living on nearby Parade Court, who wished to remain anonymous, said she could "taste" the thick smoke as it entered her home on Friday evening.

"There was lots of thick, black smoke," she said.

"We had to shut all of our windows and doors - we could taste and smell it.

"It took a few hours to get the fire properly under control. I heard lots of explosions."

Residents left 'devastated' following huge fire in Speedwell workshop

A business owner with a unit in the building, who wished to remain anonymous, said she had been left "devastated" by the fire and added dozens of businesses may have been been affected.

"I'm devastated. Years of hard work and working seven days a week just gone," she said.

"I arrived at around 6am and saw black smoke coming from our unit.

"We can't get any information from anyone, we've been told it could be 2-3 days until we hear something.

"Between 30-40 businesses could be affected."
