New photos of scrapped flyovers show view of city centre not seen in decades

These new photos of the area around the scrapped Churchill Way flyovers offer a view of the city that's gone unseen for decades.

The enormous task of pulling down the 50-year-old flyovers began in September as workers embarked on the four-month project.

The two-lane concrete flyovers have been a major feature of the city since the 1970s, but now the space they once occupied looks totally unrecognisable.

A picture taken from Byrom Street shows an open gap where the flyover previously was.

Rather than coming down in one go, sections of the structure were cut down, while still in the air, and lowered to the ground before they were taken away and crushed.

Previous pictures showed this process happening, as striking pieces of concrete were left in the open.

Now nothing of the original structure can be seen and a nearby listed building is in full view.

The removal is costing the council £6.75m, with the method chosen to protect nearby features as well as collections in museums that sit metres from the flyovers.

The council said it is developing a "masterplan" for the area which it hopes to have ready for the public to comment on later in 2019.

A pedestrian diversion route will take people via Dale Street and Hatton Garden to Great Crosshall Street back to the LJMU campus.

Alternatively, people can walk up William Brown Street and across Lime Street to Hunter Street while work is completed.
