New PCR testing centers will be set up near Haneda, Narita and Kansai airports around September in a measure to ease restrictions on entries and departures by the new coronavirus, Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Katsunobu Kato announced Thursday.
Kato made the announcement after inspecting the quarantine process at Narita Airport.
Currently, PCR tests for checking coronavirus infections are being carried out inside the airports, but getting results takes one or two days, which is not as fast as desired.
The establishment of the new testing centers is aimed at strengthening the quarantine system by expanding inspection personnel and equipment.
Those leaving Japan may be required by the countries of their destination to show a negative certificate.
In addition to the three airports, the ministry plans to set up local testing bases in Tokyo and Osaka Prefecture to accommodate those departing for overseas.
