New passport rules will allow facial recognition technology to scan UK citizens

New passport rules will make it easier for British citizens to get through checks and border control while people from outside the UK planning to arrive here will have to provide proof of their identities. Home Secretary Priti Patel has unveiled plans for 'contactless corridors' using facial recognition technology so your identity will be automatically confirmed when you walk through an airport.

A Home Office document setting out the plans says there will be rooms where people will have their faces scanned as they walk - with people not even noticing it is being done, reports The Times.

On the other hand, foreign citizens coming to the UK will have to download an app and submit biometric data under the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. Trials of the new technology are set to start in 2024 and be fully deployed within a year.

Passengers without British or Irish passports will have apply for ETA or an e-visa from next year. The change in rules will also allow children as young as 10 to use e-gates.
