New park will entertain families on the way to the coast

Parents know well the park at the top of the main street in Braidwood is a godsend on the way to the coast. Almost as much as a pie at the bakery.

Next to the swimming pool, and with the handy public toilets, Ryrie Park would have been enjoyed by countless of Canberra children having a break from the car on their way to holidays at the beach.

So it might come as shock to see it gone, now just a hole in the ground. Even that really cool treadmill roller thing. But, fear not, a new park is on its way, in time for summer.

The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council says the new $500,000 playground will have a lot of cool features including a slide topped with a windmill, evoking the paddocks around the region. There will also be a flying fox, nature play area and bike path.

A spokesman said $489,000 was allocated from the NSW government for the playground. The Braidwood Community Association raised $11,000.

The community, including the Braidwood Playground sub-committee, was asked to contribute their thoughts to creating a fun and engaging playground.

"Construction is expected to be complete in late October or early November before Kings Highway traffic starts to really ramp up for summer and more people start taking their usual driving breaks in Braidwood on the way to the South Coast," the spokesman said.
