New Palace Arcade and Adventureland saved from closure

The closure of New Palace Arcade and Adventureland has been postponed despite plans to demolish the building.

Many were devastated to hear the 1930s building in New Brighton, Wirral, could be levelled to make way for a hotel, flats and shops.

Owner David Wilkie had previously spoken of the difficult maintenance costs of more than £100,000 a year.

He had previously stated the site could close before Christmas this year, however, this looks likely to be extended until Christmas 2022 as discussions over the redevelopment continue.

David told the ECHO: "We have had an amazing summer and have had some great weather.

"With all the staycations it has really helped to keep the money here and stopped us from going into a recession.

"I expect to be open for another year, until next Christmas and then I expect there will be a two-year gap where I want to reinvest money back into New Brighton."

Previously, David told the ECHO of his plans for the site included reinvesting money made from the sale of the building back into the area.

He said he wanted to secure some of the commercial space in the redevelopment project to put back some arcades and a miniature village of New Brighton called Giant Footsteps.

David said: “I have good staff and I want to keep them. While we are still working on preliminaries, I have already agreed to space for the arcade which will have the latest virtual reality technology.

“The miniature village will cost around £1m and will include the New Brighton Tower, which will be about chest height. Then there is a plan to have a laser projection of the rest of the tower with clouds and be able to change from day to night.

“I am also looking at people giving talks about the history of New Brighton because there is such a rich history. It is going to be totally amazing.

“And I also still have a lot of the old wat equipment from the tunnels underneath the building that I would love to see going somewhere, even if I were to give them away to a museum.”

He also hinted at looking at acquiring some land to bring the fairground back after the sale of the building.
