Veteran kicker Greg Joseph has zero dollars of guaranteed money in the 1-year deal he signed with the Green Bay Packers.
According to Over the Cap, Joseph has a $1,125,000 base salary, $117,500 roster bonus and $50,000 workout bonus in his new deal. His salary cap number will be $1,152,500, but only if he makes the 53-man roster.
The $1,125,000 base salary is the minimum for a player in the NFL with at least five accrued seasons, like Joseph.
The Packers signed Joseph to provide competition at kicker for Anders Carlson, who is entering Year 2 after a shaky rookie season in Green Bay.
Joseph’s contract suggests he is entering a true competition and likely had few other suitors. Even if he earns a workout bonus for attending the offseason workout program, a likely outcome given the looming competition, the Packers will have next to nothing invested him in terms of guaranteed money for 2024. Adding Joseph was a low-risk avenue for pushing Carlson, a sixth-round pick in 2023, and potentially improving at kicker in 2024.
Joseph earned over $2 million from the Minnesota Vikings during each of the last two seasons.
Carlson is on Year 2 of his four-year rookie deal. His cap number is $954,194 for 2024, and he is under team control through 2026. The Packers would count $117,582 in dead money against the salary cap in 2024 if Joseph wins the competition and Carlson is cut.
Last season, Joseph made 24 of 30 field goals and 36 of 38 extra points. Joseph and Carlson were both 7-of-13 on field goals of 40 or more yards. Joseph turns 30 years old in August.
