New P-plater busted 83km over the limit

A P-plate teenage driver has been busted driving more than 80 kilometres over the speed limit - just 12 days after getting his NSW licence.

Police say the 17-year-old was detected driving 83km/h above the limit in Sydney's west on Friday night.

Highway Patrol officers were monitoring drivers along the Great Western Highway at Prospect, when they clocked a silver BMW sedan allegedly travelling at 163km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The teenager from Merrylands was pulled over further down the Great Western Highway.

He provided a P1 licence - issued only 12 days prior to the arrest - which restricts him to a maximum of 90km/h.

His licence was immediately suspended and he was issued with a court attendance notice, but the car could not be seized as he is not the legal owner.

He will appear at Parramatta Local Court on August 3.
