Tochinoshin is off to a strong start in his first basho as ozeki at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.
Tochinoshin was put in an unfavorable position against komusubi Shohozan, but the Georgian wrestler demonstrated his power to beat the komusubi and notch his third win in as many days on Tuesday at Aichi Prefectural Gym.
After the jump-off, Shohozan got a two-handed grip on Tochinoshin's belt to move into good position. However, Tochinoshin lifted the komusubi off the ring, carrying the resisting Shohozan out.
The yokozuna pair also kept their records perfect on Day 3 of the Nagoya tournament. Kakuryu, who seeks his third straight Emperor's Cup, easily pushed out No. 1 maegashira Shodai, while Hakuho beat No. 1 maegashira Kotoshogiku.
Ozeki Takayasu suffered his first loss at the tournament to No. 2 maegashira Chiyonokuni in a bout filled with exchanges of thrusts and throws.
