New outdoor event space with festival feel launches at Flipside Cocktail Club in Clifton

A new outdoor event space has launched in Clifton featuring a top sound system, delicious street food and a festival feel.

The covered space has launched in the courtyard of Flipside Cocktail Club on Whiteladies Road, with the venue spending one month and more than £6,000 creating it.

The decks will be graced by DJs playing a wide range of different genres and styles - but the volume from the Void sound system will be closely monitored for nearby residents.

Food is served by a pop-up from El Jefe Jose, which has proved hugely popular since launching in Stokes Croft in May thanks to its incredible Cuban sandwiches - and there's a huge selection of craft ales and cocktails on offer to wash down the grub.

The bar has installed 20 taps which offer the finest ciders and beers from local breweries including Wiper & True, Moor and Arbor, alongside an impressive range of cocktails.

Andy Dodd, owner of Flipside - which is rebranding to highlight the move towards craft beer and away from a club - said the new outdoor space has enabled the venue to massively increase its overall capacity, boosting its chances of survival.

"Our inside capacity is down by 70 per cent with social distancing guidelines in place, but the new outdoor space almost takes us back up to 100 per cent," he said.

"It's taken a huge amount of work getting the garden finished but we're really happy with how it's looking.

"We wanted it to have a festival feel so there's loads of bunting, festoon lighting and some disco lights to make it feel like a covered outdoors club."

Andy said he has been able to hire four new members of staff thanks to the launch of the outside space.

The majority of the 18 tables in it are covered while heaters dotted throughout make it inviting in the colder months.

Every Wednesday the garden welcomes Asbo Disco, who are known for spinning the finest party tunes, while on Thursdays it hosts Vybe - a multi-genre night with something for everyone.

On Friday and Saturday the decks are graced by Flipside's resident DJs and on Sunday it's the turn of Sunday Service to bless the seated crowd with the finest funk and soul.

Scott Ryan, promoter for Vybe, said: "It's a really great space and Andy has put in a lot of work creating it from scratch.

"Obviously music can only be played at a restricted volume for now because of Covid restrictions but the sound quality is still really good thanks to the Void sound system.

"There aren't that many opportunities in Bristol for DJs to play live at the moment and it's really hard out there for artists with everything that's going on, so it's great that bars like Flipside are doing this."

Over lockdown Flipside adapted by launching its own cocktail delivery service, called Cocktails 2 You, which it continues to run.

More information about the new space can be found on Flipside's Facebook page or its website.
