New Orleans shooting: Two people in critical condition after 11 shot in French Quarter

Eleven people have been shot after a suspect opened fire in New Orleans.

Two victims are said to be in a critical condition having been shot in the chest and torso.

The shooting happened in the early hours of Saturday morning in a popular nightspot in the French Quarter.

According to reports in the US, police were nearby and initially thought they were being fired at.

One 'person of interest' was detained, police said, but it is not clear if they were the shooter, ABC News reports .

No further detail has been released about the suspect.

At least 11 people were shot and two are in a critical condition, according to reports (WWLTV)

The incident happened at around 3.20am between Bourbon and Chartres streets.

No fatalities have been reported as a result of the attack.

Ten people are understood to have been rushed to hospital by ambulance, while another made their own way there.

It is not clear what the motive was behind the shooting.

There was already an increased police presence in the area because of the Beyou Classic American football game being played over the Thanksgiving weekend.
