New Order's Manchester International Festival show is being streamed for free this weekend

Manchester International Festival will stream a free New Order show this weekend as part of a new online programme of performances.

So It Goes, the band's collaboration with artist Liam Gillick, was performed over five nights at Old Granada Studios as part of the 2017 festival.

The shows saw the band rip up and reimagine their music, accompanied by a 12-piece synthesiser orchestra from the Royal Northern College of Music, who performed behind slatted windows in an immersive stage set that pulsed and glowed in perfect sync with the music.

A glowing M.E.N review described it as 'a musical masterstroke with visuals to match'.

"So It Goes epitomises all that's best about MIF - drawing on Manchester's incomparable cultural legacy to create something entirely its own," we wrote.

Featuring tracks ranging from much-loved 1986 single Bizarre Love Triangle to 2015’s Plastic, from the critically-acclaimed album Music Complete, this special online presentation is a rare chance to relive those magical five nights.

This one-night-only revival of the original live stream from the event begins with a conversation between Gillick and Manchester-based DJ and author Dave Haslam, and then joins the performance for the second half of the show.

John McGrath, artistic director and CEO of Manchester International Festival, says: “New Order are Manchester legends with a truly global influence and we’re thrilled to be returning to this fantastic show to kick off MIF LIVE.

"Over the coming weeks we’ll be giving people a peek into our archives, revisiting some of our much-loved festival shows along with opportunities to hear some of the artists talking about their work, plus exciting new work from Manchester artists.

"We’re grateful for the support of our artists, partners, co-commissioners and rights holders who have enabled MIF LIVE to happen as we find different ways to share and connect during these difficult times.”

The show will be streamed via MIF's YouTube channel on Friday, April 17, at 7.30pm, and will be available to watch for 24 hours only.

The show will be one of the highlights of the new MIF LIVE lockdown programme, which will feature free archive shows, talks and behind the scenes insights from the festival and its artists.

This week's line-up includes a streaming of Neneh Cherry in conversation with Dave Haslam on Thursday, April 16, at 12.30pm.

There will also be a reimagined version of its micro-festival series, Festival In My House, designed to reach audiences in lockdown, starting on Wednesday, April 15 at 7.30pm.

The first will feature MIF Jerwood fellow, poet, playwright and performance artist Chanje Kunda, who has created a light-hearted response to the toilet roll shortage.

The full schedule will be announced on MIF's website and social channels each week.
