New on DVD: A monster comes home to roost in 'Hatching'

A Finnish horror fairy tale tops the DVD releases for the week of Nov. 22.

"Hatching": A girl hatches a bird monster from an egg she finds in the forest, discovering a creature who is the embodiment of her darkest impulses, in the directorial debut of Hannah Bergholm.

"Like many great monster movies, 'Hatching' uses a monster as a metaphor for repressed emotion, and the creature at the center of this film is one of the most uniquely grotesque creations seen on screen in a long time," writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. "Crucially, the film resists over-explaining, allowing details to remain mysterious, implying and suggesting and allowing the viewer to speculate and imagine rather than spoon-feeding any outwardly explicit answers."
