New offshore wind generating record blown in on Bank Holiday Monday

Offshore wind set a new generating high of 17.6GW on Bank Holiday Monday, with 48.4 per cent of UK electricity supplied at 3.30pm.

Grimsby’s world-leading cluster more than played its part, with the seven operational farms generating.

RenewableUK’s deputy chief executive, former Grimsby MP Melanie Onn, said: “On a wet and unseasonably cold May Bank Holiday, Britain’s wind farms generated a record amount of clean power just when we needed it most to stay warm and dry.

“The fact that wind is generating nearly half the country’s electricity shows how central it has become in our modern energy system.

“The UK’s healthy pipeline of wind energy projects set to be built onshore and offshore will help us to reach the Government’s target of net zero emissions as fast as possible, and as we ramp up our renewable energy capacity we can expect fresh records in the years ahead.”

Lynn, Inner Dowsing, Lincs, Humber Gateway, Westermost Rough, Race Bank and Hornsea One make up the Grimsby cluster, with Triton Knoll and Hornsea Two in construction.

Hornsea Three and Four are likely to follow, with Total also developing a 1.5GW farm as part of Round Four, with Green Investment Group, as revealed in February’s leasing announcements.

A trio of North West developments and two further Dogger Bank projects in the North East were also revealed then.

Monday’s record saw off the 17.5GW high set in February.
