New Oasis documentary will be released about their famous Knebworth gigs

Having opened and closed the brilliant documentary Supersonic at Knebworth, it's fitting that the next film about Oasis is all about those iconic gigs from 1996.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the legendary shows, which saw Oasis play two nights at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire on Saturday and 10 Sunday 11 August 1996.

In recent weeks, it was reported that Noel and Liam Gallagher had formed a production company called Kosmic Kyte for "motion picture production activities."

This lead some fans to believe that a biopic on the brothers could be in the works but speaking with Zoe Ball on the BBC, Noel said: "There’s a lot of stories in the press about it being a film company for a biopic, which of course it’s not.

"The gig Oasis did at Knebworth is 25-years-old in August and back in 1997 we’d filmed it all really professionally with loads of cameras, we had cameras on the trains with fans and all that.

"But for one reason or another, the film never came out but as it’s the anniversary coming up, we’re going to be releasing that documentary now. it's in production and I’ve seen a tiny trailer of it and it’s a fantastic snapshot of a bygone era before the internet. It’s great, really great."

As seen in Supersonic, Noel believes that this was the pinnacle of the band in terms of creativity and popularity.

As fans will know, the story of how the Manchester band got to the biggest stage in the world is truly legendary because, in just over three years, Oasis went from signing with Creation Records to headlining the biggest festival in England in front of 250,000 people over two nights.

Riding high on the success of 1995's (What's The Story) Morning Glory, Knebworth would arguably be the height of the band's successes.

“I just think in the times in which we live, it would be unrepeatable," said Noel Gallagher and in many ways, he's right.

Simply put, two-and-a-half million people applied for tickets to those gigs and it took 3,000 crew members to stage the concert.

Over the course of two nights, the band played to half a million people and the billing reads like a who's who of the Brit Pop era with Ocean Colour Scene, The Manic Street Preachers, The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Cast, Kula Shaker, and The Charlatans all on the billing over the two nights.

In terms of highlights, former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire appeared on stage with Oasis to play with them on Champagne Supernova and there was also a massive outpouring of love and support for The Charlatans because only three weeks before the gig, their keyboard player Rob Collins died in a car crash.

As he said at the end of Supersonic, we'll let Noel Gallagher explain what made those two gigs in Knebworth so special.

"Anybody that was ever in Oasis, me included, was never the best in the world at anything but when it all came together, we made people feel something that was indefinable. We're still the same band that was playing in the boardwalk, we're virtually wearing the same clothes.

"All that's happened is it's caught fire and all these people have got on board. People will never, ever, ever forget the way that you made them feel. There's a chemistry between the band and the audience. There's something magnetic drawing the two to each other, the love and the vibe and the passion and the rage and the joy that comes from the crowd. If anything, that's what Oasis was."

At present, no release date has been set for the new Oasis documentary but we'd expect it to coincide with the anniversary of the actual Knebworth gigs, so August is a smart bet.
