A new nursery in Cambuslang has opened its doors to children for the first time.
Lightburn ELC on Mill Road in Halfway is the latest of the new Early Learning and Childcare centres to be opened by South Lanarkshire Council, as the local authority continues to expand its early years capacity.
The new early years provision includes the expansion of nurseries that operate to the same term times as schools and additional 52 week a year centres, such as Lightburn ELC.
The hope is that the mixture will mean more choice for families and better access to the early years provision that will be best suited to them.
Head of establishment Donna Brown, who is from Cambuslang, said: “We are so excited to be open and welcoming our first children here at Lightburn ELC.
“In addition to a brand new building that has been designed and purpose built to offer the best in modern nursery provision we also have an amazing outdoor space including a great range of play equipment and our Hobbit house. The children will love being able to go outside to play and learn all year round.
“Even before opening we already had so much interest from the local community and we feel so lucky to be part of it. Being local myself I am so happy to be to have this opportunity to play such an important role in young lives in this area. ”
South Lanarkshire Council's chair of education resources, Councillor Katy Loudon said: “Our expansion of 52 week a year and extended early years provision is a key part of providing a range of support and learning opportunities that match modern family life.
“With Lightburn ELC now opening I would thank all the staff for their hard work in getting it ready to welcome the children. I would also like to give special thanks to everyone who has continued working on this project through the pandemic to deliver it for the community.”
Lightburn ELC currently employs a total of eleven early years staff, a caretaker, a cook and a cleaner. It has a capacity for 136 children aged from three to five and a further 40 aged two to three.
Any parents or carers who are interested in applying for a place for a child to attend Lightburn ELC should contact the unit by email at gw20lightburnoffice@glow.sch.uk or telephone 0141 641 3506 for details.
