New Nottingham Forest signing's Championship 'challenge' as boss left frustrated

Having faced Nottingham Forest earlier in the season, new signing James Garner says he is surprised to see the Reds struggling at the bottom end of the Championship table.

The 19-year-old midfielder  has joined on loan from Manchester United,  after spending the first half of the campaign with Watford.

He played the full 90 minutes at the City Ground when Forest and the Hornets played out a 0-0 draw last month.

And he is now hoping to make a difference for Chris Hughton’s side, who find themselves just one place above the relegation zone after drawing 0-0 with Barnsley this afternoon.

Boss' verdict

Boss Chris Hughton was left frustrated at Nottingham Forest’s failure to capitalise on “pivotal moments” as they drew 0-0 with Barnsley.

The Reds have struggled in attack this season, and their troubles continued as they were unable to make the most of some good chances at the City Ground.

Lewis Grabban and Sammy Ameobi spurned the hosts’ best opportunities in the first half, while Anthony Knockaert went close after the break.

It made it three games without a win for Forest, on the back of successive defeats in the league and FA Cup, and leaves them still perilously placed in the Championship table.

Tykes fume

Barnsley boss Valerien Ismael was furious his side were not given a penalty in their 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Chris Hughton’s Reds spurned some golden chances to take all three points against the Tykes, with Lewis Grabban, Sammy Ameobi and Anthony Knockaert all going close.

But the visitors felt they should have had a spot-kick when Michal Helik appeared to have been pulled back in the box by Joe Worrall, only for referee Leigh Doughty to wave away their appeals.

“It was a really, really big mistake and a game changer. We need to have a clear and proper decision, so it is a big frustration,” Ismael said.

Injury concern

Nottingham Forest have potentially been dealt a fresh injury blow as Samba Sow was forced off before the hour mark in their clash with Barnsley.

The midfielder looked to have suffered an ankle problem at the City Ground and he was substituted in the second half.

Sow went down in the first few minutes against the Tykes. He was able to carry on, but went down again in the second half and was replaced by Fouad Bachirou.

It was only the latter’s third appearance in the Garibaldi after signing in the summer, as he has struggled with his own injury problems this term.
