New Northumbrian Afternoon Tea offers unique twist with Craster kipper tart and Lindisfarne trifle

Afternoon tea with a North East difference is now on the menu in Northumberland and set to introduce visitors to some local specialities.

Instead of the traditional scones and sarnies offering, St Mary’s Inn near Morpeth is out to whet the appetite with the launch of a Northumbrian afternoon tea which adds something more interesting to the mix.

On offer will be some regional favourites such as saveloy dip; pan haggerty and Craster kipper tart.

And the sweet side of the afternoon tea will feature singing hinny and even Lindisfarne mead trifle.

The idea is to offer a more substantial, please-all take on the traditional idea of afternoon tea which is said to have originated among the wealthy social classes of England in the 1840s.

Robin Freer, general manager St Mary’s Inn which is in St Mary’s Park just outside Stannington Village, said: "We wanted to offer something between lunch and dinner that people can share.

"And we are a pub so we knew it would have to be filling and generous - and why not something that symbolises where we’re from?"

He added: "We’re hopeful that the new menu will continue to appeal to traditionalists, as well as people with hearty appetites who enjoy a pint of local ale as they eat!"

The pub - which is also a B&B and last year's Best in Region winner of the National Pub & Bar Awards - will be serving its Northumbrian Afternoon Tea between 12noon and 4pm from Mondays to Saturdays.
