New NHS postcode tracker tells you how many coronavirus cases are in your area

A new tool by NHS Digital tells you how many coronavirus cases are in your area.

The digital service works by simply typing your postcode in - and can show you data for up to 10 miles.

All you have to do it enter a postcode, choose a distance from the postcode, and click the 'Go' button to load a dashboard for your local area.

In towns and cities, three to five miles will show your surrounding areas, but you might need to use a larger distance in rural areas, the NHS advises.

The service only works for postcodes in England.

The tool counts cases by the number of people who have tested positive in the selected week.

It then works out the number of cases per 100,000 people in the given location.

It also provides information on what is described as 'telephone triages'.

These are new clinical assessments by NHS 111 of people with potential coronavirus symptoms over the week.

The interactive tool also presents the data in maps and graphs.

This comes as new figures showed that the number of deaths in England and Wales with Covid-19 on the death certificate soared by 40% in just a week.

A total of 1,937 deaths registered in the week ending November 6 mentioned the  coronavirus, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This is the highest number of deaths involving the virus since the week ending May 22.

It is also up from 1,379 deaths in the week to October 30 - a jump of 40%.

England’s national lockdown legally expires at midnight at the end of Wednesday 2 December.

It can be extended if Boris Johnson decides that is necessary, but that would need a new vote by MPs.

Whatever happens, MPs will get a vote in Parliament to approve whatever system replaces the national lockdown.

That system is due to be decided on next week once the government has enough data on which way the virus is going.

It should also be unveiled next week, though when exactly a vote will take place has not yet be confirmed.
