New Newcastle favourite Allan Saint-Maximin talks about his niggling hamstring problem

Allan Saint-Maximin insists he’s not injury prone and there should be no long-term issues with his hamstring.

Saint-Maximin lit up Newcastle’s defeat of Manchester United with his direct, incisive attacking play and Steve Bruce will be desperate to keep him fit for the flurry of crucial fixtures coming up.

Saint-Maximin clearly adds another dimension to Newcastle’s attack and United will continue to manage his training schedule to ensure the troublesome injury which disrupted his season does not re-occur.

For his part, the winger says fans should not worry about his fitness. “This injury doesn’t happen a lot of times. In my last season in France I played in every game and all the time. I changed league, I’ve been injured but I keep working to come back and now I played 82 minutes and I feel good,” he told BBC Newcastle.

Saint-Maximin’s longest spell without injury could dovetail with Matt Ritchie coming back before the next international break in November, which will give Bruce better forward options heading into the winter months.

The former Nice man says he’s desperate to retain his place. “I feel better. I think you see on the pitch I feel better but I have to keep working because I need to play more. I need to play every game to feel much better,” he said.

“I’ve been in the team from the start against Tottenham and we win, now I start against Man U and we win. I’m very happy. My job is my quality, it’s to run, to do some dribbling and sometimes to do a lot of things on the pitch.”
