New name for BT Sport announced as Premier League to be shown on fresh TV channel

Premier League viewers will be able to watch matches on the newly-named TNT Sports, after BT Sport was bought by Warner Bros Discovery.

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer Division, confirmed the new name, which will come into force from July 2023. BT Sport has been a broadcaster of Premier League football since 2013.

"We've announced that we're making another important move in our plans with @wbd to bring together the best of BT Sport and Eurosport under one roof," Allera wrote on Twitter. "TNT Sports is the new name that will replace BT Sport, from July 2023."

In addition to Premier League games, BT Sport has shown the Champions League and Europa League football in the United Kingdom. It also carries coverage of a number of other leagues and sports.

BT and Warner Bros Discovery entered talks in early February 2022. “The proposed joint venture with Discovery would create an exciting new sports broadcasting entity for the UK and would act as a perfect home for our BT Sport business," Allera said at the time.

“With a shared ambition for growth, as well as the combination of our world-class sports assets along with Discovery’s premium sports and entertainment content, our customers will benefit from even more content in more places.”

BT Sport's Premier League deal currently runs until 2025, but the brand itself will give way to TNT Sports before that point. A new holding company named Warner Bros Discovery Sport was established in advance of the latest announcement.

When that deal expires, the likes of Apple TV and DAZN have been tipped to enter a bidding war for Premier League rights. Currently, games are split between BT Sport, Sky Sports and Amazon Prime Video, though Apple TV made a significant step into sports broadcasting by picking up Major League Soccer rights ahead of the 2023 season.

There are five BT Sport channels, while Eurosport, which was already owned by Warner Bros Discovery, has two channels in the UK. According to the Daily Mail, the total number is likely to be reduced.

Under the terms of the most recent Premier League TV rights deal, confirmed in 2021, BT Sport has been given a confirmed 52 Premier League matches in the 2022-23 season. Sky Sports has 128 games and Amazon Prime Video has 20.

"The UK renewals for the next broadcast cycle - from seasons 2022/2023 to 2024/2025 - will be concluded at the same overall value as the current arrangements between the Premier League and its broadcast partners," a Premier League statement at the time read.

"As part of the Premier League's developing strategic plan, the renewals will provide financial certainty to clubs throughout professional football as a result of maintaining current levels of support and enables the League to commit to increased funding. This will give security and continuity throughout the pyramid until at least 2025."
