Twenty years after the death of Princess Diana in a tragic accident, public interest in her life remains as strong as ever. After countless documentaries and films produced about her, the Princess story will now be featured again in a musical play, which will be staged in California in February.

The play is set in 1981, the year that the late royal married Prince Charles. It will focus on Diana in her twenties, and explore her relationship with Prince Charles, and his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles.

The synopsis of the musical reads: "It's 1981 and the world is hungry for a royal wedding. But is the 20-year-old bride prepared for what comes after? Following her fairytale union, Princess Diana faces a distant husband, and overwhelming media scrutiny. But her modern perspective and remarkable compassion galvanizes a nation, even as it threatens the royal family's hold on England."

Writer Joe DiPietro revealed how the princess’s story will be told through music, and said: “Diana is pop-rock, royalty is string quartet, we have paparazzi as punk guitars and we try to make all those roles live on top of each other.”

According to “Hello” magazine, auditions are currently underway and the musical will premiere on 19 February 2019.
