New music: Wild Flag – Electric Band

When former Sleater-Kinney guitarist and singer Carrie Brownstein announced her new project, Wild Flag – formed with ex-bandmate Janet Weiss, and members of the Minders and Helium – she did so via a cryptic message on MySpace: "What is the sound of an avalanche taking out a dolphin? What do get when you cross a hamburger with a hot dog? The answer is: WILD FLAG." In reality, Wild Flag sound like a brilliant amalgam of each member's musical past, and their recently released self-titled album is a mixture of Brownstein's more aggressive post-rock leanings and Mary Timony's complex compositions. On Electric Band this equates to noodly guitar riffs, 60s girl-group harmonies and a lovely, lilting melody. For the video, the band take on a baseball team of bears, side-stepping the usual rules (we're no experts) to pitch a water balloon before a difficult catch sees them declared winners.

• Wild Flag play the Lexington in London on 8 December.
