New music: Syron – Breaking

Nineteen-year-old Syron – or Daisy Syron Russell to her nearest and dearest – has been slowly making a name for herself via early support from ID magazine (they called her "one of the coolest new female talents", which is nice) and The xx, who blogged about her first single Here earlier this summer. She also appeared on Rudimental's Spoons alongside the equally young and talented MNEK, and is about to release Breaking, her first proper single, via upcoming London label Black Butter Records. A soulful, garage-influenced ballad about emerging into the outside world for the first time following a devastating break-up, it's littered with clues that she's not quite over her ex: "The way I've done my hair is exactly just the way that you like" she croons in the first verse, while the song's repeated coda of "I keep forgetting that I'm not allowed to love you" is heartbreaking in its simplicity. For the video – premiered here – we find Russell hanging about aimlessly in a laundrette and walking her dog, whilst various effects and filters make it seem like parts of it were filmed on VHS, like tarnished memories.

• Breaking is out on 24 September.
