New mum jailed for lying about father of baby on birth certificate 'to spite ex'

A new mum has been jailed for lying about the name of the father on her baby's birth certificate.

Louise Boyce, 30, pretended her new boyfriend was the baby's father instead of her former lover Ashley Sayce, the child's real dad.

Boyce had "acted out of spite" by leaving Mr Sayce off the birth certificate because the pair had a bitter split, a court heard.

The court heard she took her new boyfriend Nathan Leggatt with her to fill in the birth certificate - and the pair told officials he was the father.

Leggatt, 34, broke down in tears during the signing and told staff: "It's a bit emotional to register the baby's birth."

But the lies were rumbled after social services were involved - and a paternity test proved the truth in the case.

Boyce and Leggatt, both of Manselton, Swansea, were arrested and admitted willfully giving false information concerning registration of a birth.

David Singh, defending Boyce, said she acted "out of spite" towards her former partner Mr Sayce, and a "desire" for Leggatt to be the baby's dad.

Andrew Evans, defending Leggatt, said he "had a genuine desire" to play an active role in the baby's welfare and wanted to be loyal to Boyce.

Boyce - who is pregnant again - was jailed for eight months and Leggatt jailed for six months at Swansea Crown Court.
