New mum found dead on hospital floor with days old baby underneath her

A mum was found dead on the floor of her hospital room with her newborn underneath her.

The mother, who was in a single room, was reported as fine after being checked on by doctors at around 7am.

But just one hour later, the woman, in her 30s, was dead on the floor.

Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) is now investigating the tragedy.

The baby is currently receiving emergency treatment after suffering severe injuries, RSVP Live says.

The cause of death is unknown but being treated as a tragic accident.

The Irish Times reports the woman may have had a medical episode caused the woman to fall out of bed while she was breastfeeding.

It is believed the baby was born on the weekend.

Mum, 22, dies suddenly while caring for baby - despite having no health problems

The South South-West Hospital Group said: Our priority is supporting the patient’s  family  and therefore we will not be commenting on the individual case at this time."

CUMH, which opened in 2007, supports new mothers and offers a variety of rooms, including one-, two- and four-bed rooms.
