New mum explodes at mother in law for 'bizarre' reaction to baby name

A new mum left her mother-in-law in tears after telling her to "f*** off" after her reaction to her baby's name.

The mum's daughter was three days old when her mother-in-law paid a visit to meet her newest grandchild. Throughout her pregnancy, her mother-in-law repeatedly expressed her distaste for the chosen name, claiming it sounds like some "poor maid name from somewhere far away".

The situation escalated when her mother-in-law again expressed dislike for the name upon meeting her new granddaughter, and then said it was the new mum's "choice" and that she "probably didn't let" her husband "have a say".

Feeling frustrated, the mum told her mother-in-law to "please f*** off". In a post on Mumsnet's Am I Being Unreasonable [AIBU] thread, she sought advice on whether she was in the wrong for how she handled the situation.

Explaining she "rarely swears", the new mum explained the situation - and her colourful response - and continued: "She started crying, and then said I was really cruel and mean, and I was never going to let her get a look in from the get go. My H [husband] said she needs to leave. She has blocked both of our numbers. H is really sad. It's a special name to me. I like the meaning.

"She kept saying subtle things that weren't outwardly rude but just had a strange vibe. One of them was along the lines of 'oh she's got your skin then has she? My oh my, aren't you lucky? Oh maybe you aren't? Your choice'. Just bizarre."

In response to questions about the mother-in-law's skin tone comment being racially motivated, the mum confirmed she's white with tanned skin, so didn't believe it be racist. Her post was met with heaps of responses from fellow Mumsnet users.

One said: "She sounds rude and a bit odd. Concentrate [on] yourself and your baby and let MIL sort herself out. I would be expecting an apology too. Congratulations on your beautiful baby".

Another said: "A poor maid name? Did you call her Cinderella? Congrats though, it's hard, but you did the right thing. MIL will come round when she stops being bats***, and if she doesn't stop being bats***, then you, your DH [dear husband] and little Cinders have had a lucky escape."

A third commented: "It's as if she knows that she is difficult. I hate people who say stuff like "won't let me get a look in" as if they have some kind rights/ownership. Gross. It's sad it's come to her blocking you both. But that was her choice. Don't let her make comments like that to you again."

In a follow up comment, the new mum confirmed her baby's name is Maria. Another Mumsnet user said: "Lovely classic name! Your MIL just wants to control everything. Let her process the fact that she cannot control you. Leave her to it."

And another said: "That's a lovely name and not even an unusual one! - what IS your MIL's PROBLEM? As it's her problem not anyone else's!!!" One Mumsnet user commented: "Perfectly normal lovely name! This proves your MIL is just horrible and difficult. Please do not feel guilty."
