New Multi-Modal Chatbots Push Boundaries of AI Technology and Capabilities

An AI (Artificial Intelligence) sign is seen at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai

Generative AI chatbots have rapidly become indispensable tools across various industries, transforming the way we interact with technology. These advanced platforms are not just for chatting anymore; they've evolved into multi-modal systems capable of understanding both language and visual information. This makes them some of the most sophisticated AI tools available today. As the market continues to grow and evolve, new and innovative chatbots are being developed at an unprecedented rate, offering enhanced capabilities and functionalities.

In this article, I want to highlight five notable generative AI chatbots that stand out for their unique features and the broad range of tasks they can perform. From aiding in coding and writing to generating images and even engaging in complex conversations, these chatbots represent the forefront of AI technology, demonstrating the incredible potential of generative AI in various applications.

1. ChatGPT: ChatGPT wasn't the first generative AI tool to make it to public release, but it was the first to impress a wider audience with its readiness for mainstream use. With capabilities powered by the large-language model GPT-4, ChatGPT quickly garnered a massive user base. It offers a wide range of functionalities and is often referred to as the 'do-anything-machine.' Users can rely on ChatGPT for general-purpose tasks across different domains, and it can even provide guidance on tasks it cannot directly perform. With continuous improvements and updates, ChatGPT remains one of the most versatile and widely-used chatbots available.

2. Bard: Developed by Google, Bard emerged as a response to the growing popularity of ChatGPT. While initially seen as a pale imitation, Bard has evolved into a capable and useful chatbot. Google has switched between different models, including LaMDA, PaLM 2, and currently Gemini Pro, making Bard a formidable competitor. What sets Bard apart is its seamless integration with Google's ecosystem, making it a valuable tool for users of Gmail, Workspace, and other Google productivity tools. Bard's recent updates have also introduced image generation capabilities using its Imagen 2 technology.

3. Copilot: Microsoft's AI chatbot offering, formerly known as Bing Chat, has been rebranded as Copilot. With strong integration across Microsoft's suite of tools like Windows and Microsoft 365, Copilot aims to become a mainstream choice for AI capabilities. Powered by OpenAI's impressive GPT-4 model, Copilot combines natural language prompts with a wide range of applications. Its integration with the coding platform GitHub makes it particularly useful for developers, as it allows them to create code using natural language commands.

4. Llama2: Meta's approach to generative AI chatbots is slightly different. Instead of commercializing it, they have taken a quasi-open-source approach, making the code and training data available to anyone. Llama2, their multi-modal chatbot model, can be accessed through its own URL or used to build specialized applications. One advantage of Llama2 is its ability to create private instances without relying on sending data back to Meta or the cloud. This makes it a popular choice for building chatbots that prioritize privacy and customization. According to their tests, Llama2 outperforms other open-source large-language models.

5. Claude: Developed by Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI employees, Claude is their first multi-modal chatbot capable of handling text, voice, images, and documents. Users praise Claude for its speed, coherence, and understanding of nuanced communication. Anthropic is committed to ethical and transparent AI, reflected in their principle called Constitutional AI. Claude is designed to engage with users while maintaining ethical boundaries, providing explanations for its behavior and suggesting alternative ways to accomplish tasks. Users can even assign Claude a preferred persona for an enjoyable conversation experience.

These five generative AI chatbots represent the forefront of AI technology and showcase the incredible advancements made in the field. From versatile general-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard to those integrated with industry-specific tools like Copilot, Llama2, and Claude, each offers unique capabilities that cater to various user needs. As the field continues to evolve, we can expect even more sophisticated chatbots to emerge, further revolutionizing our interactions with technology.
