New mobile base stations for regional ACT

Campers in the ACT and those who live in regional areas will get better mobile phone coverage with three new mobile base stations set to be built.

The stations will be built as part of the fifth stage a $380 million federal government program to improve mobile black spots.

The new stations will be built at Corin Forest, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Top Naas, all areas heavily affected in the summer's bushfire crisis.

Construction on the stations is set to begin in coming months.

It's expected the stations will be switched on by the end of the year.

ACT senator Zed Seselja said the new base stations will be three of 182 that will be built in regional and remote areas across the country as part of the most recent stage.

"Canberrans have been asking for improved mobile coverage," he said.

"The three new base stations will provide greater coverage for our rural landholders and Canberrans who hike, camp or enjoy recreational activities at Namadgi National Park."

There will now be 1229 base stations that have been built as part of the program.

The federal government says it will spend $34 million on the fifth round of the program.

The expansion of the base stations in regional areas comes as the government says it is looking to improve mobile phone reception in disaster-prone areas and along major transport corridors.

The government said it was looking to test new technologies to support shared mobile coverage in regional areas.
