New Metro trains revealed - this is how the new fleet will look

The new Metro fleet has been revealed.

Nexus announced on Tuesday that Swiss train manufacturer Stadler will build and manage the 42-train fleet as part of a £700m contract. Follow reaction here.

The fleet, which will include USB charging points, wi-fi, air conditioning and a tube style seating layout, will be rolled out from 2022 and be fully in place by 2024.

The images show the trains in white as no livery has been decided for the new fleet on the day of the announcement.

A Nexus spokesman said that passengers should expect "nothing less than the best transport system in the world".

Already the first tracks have been laid at the site of a new temporary Metro train depot in North Tyneside.

Work has been progressing at the former landfill site in Howdon with ballast, rails and sleepers put in place as well as drainage and site access works.

The temporary maintenance facility will help to service some of the current fleet of Metro trains while the main depot in Gosforth is rebuilt between 2020 and 2024.

A statement from Stadler said: "Stadler will also be responsible for the maintenance of the entire fleet for up to 35 years and the construction of a new maintenance depot."
