New Met Office weather warning for thunderstorms and flooding

A new weather warning has been issued for thunderstorms and potential flooding across Glasgow this week.

The yellow alert is in place for a whole 24 hours on Wednesday and covers a large swathe of central Scotland and much of England.

Both the Met Office and BBC predict our city will face thunder and lightning on Wednesday afternoon, with the Met Office suggesting a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms, from 1pm until 4pm.

They said: "Thunderstorms and outbreaks of heavy rain already affecting some southern and western parts of the warning area during the early hours of Wednesday then become more widespread through Wednesday daytime.

"In a few places these thunderstorms could produce 30 mm of rainfall in an hour and 40 to 50 mm in a few hours. Some parts of the warning area will miss the heaviest rainfall."

They added: "Further thunderstorms likely with a chance of flooding in places and possible travel disruption."

The forecast comes after a fairly warm week in Glasgow, with the maximum temperature expected to exceed 20C.

The Met Office forecast reads: "Wednesday will see some heavy and thundery showers developing. Still showery Thursday and Friday but these becoming lighter. Warm, but fresher than last week."

During last Wednesday's weather alert, lightning struck the east end of Glasgow and in Renfrew, near Glasgow Airport, shortly after 5am.

Meanwhile, lightning also struck in Renfrew, close to Glasgow Airport.

However, our city got off relatively lightly in terms of the extreme weather in comparison to the rest of Scotland, with dozens of lightning strikes felt in the Cairngorms and off the coast of Aberdeen.
