Thundersnow: New Met Office weather warning as cold snap set to arrive in Ayrshire

Ayrshire is braced for a potential thundersnow weather event tonight and tomorrow morning, following Met Office warnings.

Weather experts have issued new yellow warnings for snow and ice from tonight at 8pm until 11am on Friday this week and have also said that there is risk of lightning strikes from isolated thunderstorms.

A yellow warning means the predicted weather event is likely to happen, according to forecasters.

The Met Office warns of frequent sleet, hail, and snow showers which may lead to some disruption to travel.

The warning from experts reads: "Frequent wintry showers arriving from the west during Thursday evening and overnight are likely to lead to a fresh covering of snow for areas above 100 to 200 metres (mainly 2 to 5 centimetres, but locally 5-10cm above 200m and as much as 15cm over the highest ground where showers are most frequent).

"Falling snow below this level may cause some temporary slushy accumulations which then may freeze and cause icy patches where skies remain clear for long enough.

"Winds will be gusty around heavier showers and there is also a risk of lightning strikes from isolated thunderstorms in some coastal districts."
